Abstract

Tamil and Kannada both belong to the Dravidian family of languages. For several years, Kannada literary scholars have been conducting extensive research into the connections between Tamil and Kannada. There are differences in the ways Kannada and Tamil each encountered and responded to the influence of Sanskrit. Both languages absorbed Sanskrit in different ways. Therefore, the many differences that arose between these languages — belonging to the same Dravidian family — can be identified against the backdrop of grammar, prosody, and poetics. Accordingly, the aim of this article is to compare some theories of figures of speech (ani / alamkāra) against the backgrounds of Kannada, Tamil, and Sanskrit.
